In a groundbreaking initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government is transforming the Bundelkhand Expressway into the state’s inaugural solar-powered expressway. This ambitious project is a part of Uttar Pradesh’s strategy to boost solar energy utilization, setting a precedent in renewable energy efforts.
Revolutionizing Roadways with Solar Energy: The Bundelkhand Expressway Project
The government, embracing the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, is set to establish solar power plants alongside the Bundelkhand Expressway. These plants will boast an impressive capacity of 550 MW. Approximately 1700 hectares of land have been allocated for this eco-friendly endeavor, attracting interest from various renowned corporations.
Projected to benefit around one lakh households linked to the expressway, this solar venture is not just an energy solution but a community upliftment project. With an operational lifespan of 25 years and an expected return on investment within 10 to 12 years, the project is as economically viable as it is environmentally friendly.
Managed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the project has already completed its Expression of Interest (EOI) phase and a thorough Due Diligence Study as of August 2023. The bidding process, following the near completion of the Request for Proposals (RFP) for developer selection, is anticipated to commence shortly.
In October 2023, prominent solar power developers like Tuscon Ltd., Torrent Power Ltd., and Somaya Solar Solutions Pvt. Ltd., among others, showcased their proposals, signaling robust industry participation.
A Catalyst for E-Mobility and Sustainable Development
Upon completion, the solar-powered expressway is expected to not only meet energy requirements but also pave the way for e-mobility and regional development. The project is set to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.
The initiative promises to diversify energy sources, enhancing grid access and fostering economic growth. Job creation is another positive outcome, with local employment opportunities expected to arise. Additionally, the generated electricity will benefit surrounding villages, marking a step towards inclusive development.
Meeting Diverse Energy Needs
The solar-powered Bundelkhand Expressway is also envisioned to support various energy needs, including the charging of electric vehicles. UPEIDA stands to gain significantly from this project. Lease rent from the expressway could generate approximately ₹4 crores for UPEIDA, with an annual energy sales profit projected at around ₹50 crore. Moreover, the replication of this model on other expressways like Purvanchal, Agra-Lucknow, and Gorakhpur could reduce UPEIDA’s energy expenses by ₹6 crore annually.
Harnessing the Geographical Advantage
The Bundelkhand Expressway is an ideal location for solar power plants, thanks to its easy land access and dry, arid climate, complemented by an average annual rainfall of 800-900 mm and ample sunlight. This 296 km-long, four-lane expressway, with its main carriageway and service lane, also includes a vacant stretch ideal for solar panel installation. This unique feature is set to revolutionize the expressway into a fully solar-powered highway, marking a historical transition in sustainable infrastructure development.
