A First for Hilton in Historic Stone
Hilton has opened Elika Cave Suites Cappadocia, Curio Collection by Hilton, its first cave hotel anywhere in the world. The property sits in Ortahisar, one of Cappadocia’s quieter valleys in central Turkey, known for centuries-old dwellings carved directly into volcanic rock. The 36-room hotel follows the region’s architectural tradition, integrating modern hospitality into spaces shaped by erosion and human hands over millennia.

For travelers, it’s a chance to stay inside geology. Cappadocia’s “fairy chimneys” and cave structures were formed by volcanic ash compressed into soft tuff, then sculpted by wind and water. Early Christians, and later communities, hollowed out homes, churches, and entire underground cities. Hotels have occupied these spaces for decades, but this is Hilton’s entry into the category.

What to Expect at Elika Cave Suites
The hotel offers 36 rooms, each designed to preserve the texture and contours of the carved rock while adding contemporary comforts. Expect uneven walls, natural alcoves, and muted earth tones—less about symmetry, more about working with what the stone provides.
Elika also includes wellness facilities and what Hilton describes as “destination-focused experiences.” In Cappadocia, that typically means hot-air balloon arrangements at dawn, guided hikes through the Rose and Red Valleys, visits to underground cities like Derinkuyu, and pottery workshops in Avanos. The property is part of the Curio Collection, Hilton’s soft-brand umbrella for boutique and independent hotels with distinct character.

Why Ortahisar
Ortahisar is less trafficked than nearby Göreme or Ürgüp, both of which draw the majority of Cappadocia’s overnight visitors. The town centers on a towering rock castle—also carved and inhabited for centuries—and retains more of a residential feel. Staying here means quieter mornings and easier access to lesser-known hiking routes, though you’re still within a 15-minute drive of the main balloon launch sites and the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The timing aligns with a broader trend: established hotel groups entering or expanding in experiential, design-led properties that feel less like chains. As we covered earlier, brands are increasingly willing to adapt formats to fit unusual buildings and local context rather than impose a template.

Practical Notes for Travelers
Elika Cave Suites is bookable now through Hilton’s channels, and Hilton Honors points apply. That’s a differentiator if you’re deciding between independent cave hotels (of which there are many in the region) and a property backed by a loyalty program and standardized service expectations.
Cappadocia is accessible year-round. Winters are cold and sometimes snowy, but balloon flights still operate on clear days, and the valleys are emptier. Spring and autumn offer moderate temperatures and wildflowers or autumn color, depending on the season. Summers are hot and crowded, especially in July and August.
If you’re flying in, the nearest airports are Kayseri (about 70 kilometers away) and Nevşehir (closer but with fewer connections). Most visitors arrange a transfer through their hotel or rent a car to explore the region’s scattered valleys and villages at their own pace.
This opening adds another option in a destination where accommodation is part of the experience. Sleeping in a cave isn’t a gimmick here—it’s the local vernacular, now with turndown service and a global booking platform.
